More than 75 California
Angus breeders turned out February 3, 2004, at the Radisson Hotel in
Sacramento for an outreach seminar presented by the American Angus
Association (AAA).
One of 12 events of its

two new tools offered by the Association for seedstock producers and
their bull-buying customers. AAA staff members Bill Bowman, director
of performance programs and Matt Perrier, director of commercial
programs, discussed the Total Beef Value ($B) index, a value-based
tool designed to assist commercial producers in their genetic
selection and the Angus Source program, an identification and
marketing program for Angus and Angus-cross commercial steers and
replacement females.
AAA Regional Manager
John Dickinson of Sacramento organized the event. For more on these
programs, go to www.angus.org.

are up for reelection. Member Jim Dismukes has retired from the board.
Other nominees running for the board include Greg Schafer of Orland and
Steve Lambert of Oroville.
Information on each of the candidates follows. Watch for this newsletter
in the mail with your official ballot soon and be sure and return it by
the deadline in order for your vote to count!
Jim
Vietheer will serve again as your president in 2004; Carter Pierce was
elected vice president; Suzie Wiese, secretary, and Betsy Cardoza,
treasurer.
BETSY
CARDOZA
I currently work on my family’s cattle ranch, which has been around
since 1878. We run both commercial and purebred Angus cattle. I
attended Fresno State University and received a degree in
Agricultural Business. I have been active in the California Angus
Association for the last three years serving on the board and as the
treasurer. I have enjoyed my three years on the board and would
appreciate your vote, so I can serve another three-year term.
KELLI
TOLEDO
In the Angus business for more than 25 years, Kelli Toledo and her
husband, John own Toledo Ranches, a 500-acre farming and ranching
operation, raising Angus cattle, cotton, corn and walnuts. She is a
partner in Cornerpost Publications, co-publisher of California
Cattleman Magazine and owner of Trailhead Designs, a marketing and
design firm. Currently, she works on the CAA newsletter, CAA web
site and Angus Days dinner committees, and has worked on each
California Angus directory since 1996. In her ninth year as a 4H
beef leader, she has also served as chair of the American Angus
Auxiliary publicity committee and board member and newsletter editor
for CWA. Currently, she is an active member of CCA’s Allied Industry
Council and CBCIA.
GREG
SCHAFER
My name is Greg Schafer and I am honored to be nominated to serve on
the CAA board. I have been in the A.I. business since 1971. I have
worked as an A.I. technician, a herdsman, an evaluator, and
salesman. My wife, Louise, and I moved our Angus operation to Orland
this fall. Our herd currently numbers 29 registered Angus. Louise
and I are excited about the Angus breed and very thankful for the
support and encouragement we have received. I look forward to
serving the members of the California Angus Association. |
SHERRY
DANEKAS
Nominee for the California Angus Board of Directors Sherry Danekas
has been involved with Angus in the state of California since she
was a Junior and showed Angus cattle in Southern California. She is
currently partner with her husband James Danekas in their publishing
firm James Danekas and Associates, Inc. They currently publish the
Western Cowman magazine that serves the commercial cattlemen on the
West coast and Angus, The Magazine the Western States Angus
Association’s regional publication. She serves as editor for both of
these publications. She’s involved with her daughter Mercedes and
husband Jim in partnership of their small Angus herd located in
Wilton. She enjoyed her last tenure serving on the Board of
Directors of the California Angus Association and hopes to serve the
membership once again in this capacity.
STEVE
LAMBERT
I have been the purebred business (Polled Hereford) most of my life,
and it wasn’t until my Dad passed away that I purchased our Angus
cows from my mom. My wife (Cindy) and I have three children and run
a 700-acre ranch outside of Oroville. We farm alfalfa, grass & grain
hays and an upland game hunting club. Our main love is the cattle –
we run around 95 mother cows – half Herefords and half Angus. The
Angus have been a great change not only from an economic and
motherability aspect, they help move the Herefords through the load
up ally to the chute. As most cattle ranchers these days we have a
day job which includes a couple feed & garden stores and a bird seed
milling business. I have been on several types of boards from ag
type (Hereford, Ag Advisor) to city government (Council, Mayor,
LAFCO, Butte, EDC). I hope this gives you a little idea of who I am,
and I look forward to meeting everybody as we get out to more
events.
REMEMBER TO WATCH FOR YOUR OFFICIAL BALLOT IN THE MAIL WITH THIS
NEWSLETTER THIS MONTH .... VOTE FOR FOUR BOARD MEMBERS AND RETURN TO
SECRETARY SUZIE WIESE BY THE DEADLINE. |

The cost is $100 each for
three months. Please contact Jim Vietheer at
carter@jmlordinc.com if you are interested in advertising on
the web site.
